Luckily for me, I have always been, what is considered, healthy. But an opportunity was presented where I could trial NorthPointe Wellness so I decided to join in January of 2012. I began by trying Light & Lively and was warmly greeted by Christine and other lovely ladies. By the end of three months I had tried yoga, cycling, water walking, water exercise, and learned to use the equipment in the facility. Not only did I feel better physically, but I began to notice that my mental and emotional health was improving as well. As the year passed, because of the exceptional learning environment offered to me at NorthPointe, I have increased the intensity of my workouts and moved forward to more strenuous, challenging classes and opportunities.

I started coming to NorthPointe Wellness in March of 2010. After losing 20lbs, I decided to try the beginner spin class on Thursday with Mary. Spin was hard, but I pushed myself in class and became hooked! I started taking spin class with Herb and Kim, in addition to the Thursday beginner spin class. Here I am almost 3 years later and I have lost 94lbs total! Working 24 hour shifts as a Paramedic can be brutal on the body, but I have found that through exercise I have more energy, I am stronger, healthier, and I feel better about myself. There is no place that I have been to that has helped me more than NorthPointe. Thank you NorthPointe for helping me have a better and healthier life.

For many years I suffered the consequences of decreased flexibility by not being able to do simple things like trim my toes, back out of the driveway, or reach the back of the dryer without pain. Since joining NorthPointe, and attending Restorative Yoga, these activities and many others have become easier and pain free. Through the stretching practices, I have increased my core strength; I sit and stand taller, am more flexible, and have better balance. NorthPointe offers a variety of opportunities for me and my husband to exercise and form healthy lifestyle habits. Since our recent retirements, we find it a necessary part of our routine, working to give us a much higher chance of staying healthy and strong as we age.

With a generational history of heart disease, our family was confident NorthPointe was a good choice for us. I was already on my 2nd pacemaker/defibrillator; NorthPointe opened for me a greater variety of exercise modes to enhance my fitness endeavors. Through the superior coaching and the encouragement of the fitness experts, I continued to work on my cardiovascular health. A year ago, my cardiologist recommended open heart surgery to replace a valve. I’m so grateful for the environment NorthPointe has established, which empowered me to thoroughly prepare. 2½ weeks post-operatively I finished a mile on the track in 23 minutes; now, 8 months later, I have recovered much beyond what I had expected and have no cardiac restrictions! Every year I made the same resolution: This is the year I am going to lose weight and get fit. After 30 years of no structured exercise classes or fitness routine, I decided it was time to start. I joined NorthPointe February of 2011 and started with water walking and aqua splash. Later, I added Light and Lively and some of the exercise equipment. I also changed my diet and was encouraged to change up my exercise routine and have lost over 25lbs! Due to a pinched nerve, for over 5 years, I couldn’t stand in one spot for more than a few minutes, but now I can stand all day if need be! I owe it all to NorthPointe and the wonderful staff!

An ancient Chinese proverb states that, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The first day at NorthPointe (first step) was exciting and motivating. There was so much to work on and learn so that I could begin to deal with the health problems I was having. As a Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetic I had let myself go following the start of my retirement. I soon realized the jewel of the organization was not so much the building or equipment, but rather the talented staff of trainers and health educators who helped me achieve the results of good blood glucose control along with other critical measures such as cholesterol. Adding classes like spinning, absolute strength, and cardio inspired me. I can now complete a mile in just under seven minutes, which I routinely do two or three times per week. Because of using NorthPointe’s facilities and the professional help of the dedicated training staff, the old negatives that brought me here in the first place are now a thing of the past.

“Last year, I shattered my leg from my knee down and the doctors questioned my ability to walk again. I was bedridden for 2 months and on a walker and wheelchair for 5 months. I was told to check out NorthPointe because of the warm water pool. After joining, I found out it offers so much more. It is a facility that can take you where you want to go.

What is so great about the trainers is they understand some of us have medical issues and limitations. I especially like Restorative Yoga, Ai Chi, and Aqua Arthritis. From these classes and my dedication to exercising an hour each day, seven days a week I have seen huge improvement. “My husband Ron and I were looking for a closer place to swim when we saw that NorthPointe Wellness would be opening soon. I thought I would have to convince Ron to join but we came to check it out and signed up that day. When I was younger I could not do very much because I experienced a serious medical problem and almost lost my life. Now I do triathlons, the turkey trot, and in February I will be participating in Hustle up the Hancock. Thank you everyone on the NorthPointe staff and all the good people who come here.
